Some of the Music That Makes Me Me or My Musical Culture

Hello everyone! I'm Terri La'Sha. You may call me Terri, TJ, Sha (pronounced like Shea), or even La'Sha; however, please don't call me Terri La'Sha. Very few people call me by my entire name, mainly my family and old friends.

Music has always fascinated me and I can pretty much remember every song that I've ever heard. Sadly enough, I cannot sing or play many instruments well, so I'm forever doomed to remain a member of the audience. Nevertheless, I've never let my lack of musical talent prevent me from interacting with or enjoying music. I've pretty much taken it into stride and switched my attention to writing since it's my true passion in life and happens to be something I'm good at. After all, my grandmother always said that it is better to interact with what you love in some way than not at all.

In all honesty, writing and compiling this blog post has been one of the most difficult things I've done in the last few months. Shockingly not due to a willingness to share my music taste, but because it is so eclectic that it was difficult to pinpoint specific preferences.

Hopefully, the following gives at least a brief snapshot of my music taste!

A category of music that will always have a spot in my heart is Rock, in most if not all of its forms, whether that be Classic, alternative, or even metal. This is mainly because it reminds me of what I consider my youth and not necessarily simpler but more emotive times in my life.

Two kinds of music that I've taken the opportunity to delve deeper into during this quarantine are Chill R&B. It took a conscious effort on my end to prevent myself from including it in the previous category. It has always been a long-time favorite but in my efforts to further diversify my playlist, reacquaint myself with popular culture, and to stop listening to the same songs repeatedly, I hadn't been able to enjoy them the same. So, when I got stuck in quarantine and an unknown environment where everything was constantly fluctuating, it felt nice to return to my safe space. Some specific artists are NAO, SZA, Jorja Smith, and Sade. My personal favorite lately has been Tink's Hopeless Romantic.

A type of music that I haven't been able to connect with as well is Electronic Dance Music, EDM. Now, don't mistake me, there are some songs in the category I enjoy, but compared to other kinds of music my affinity is severely lacking. Despite its prevailing popularity in pop culture, I haven't been able to get past how impersonal it feels. Perhaps, it's because of its lack of words and tendency to disregard the vocalists and lyricists involved. I understand that remixes are important and EDM is a way for lots of producers and mixers to express themselves, but it simply does not evoke as many emotions in me.

  1. I also really connect with rock. My dad and I would listen to 80's hair metal like scorpion and ac/dc, while my boyfriend and I reminisce about the early 2000's rock like blink-182 and bullet for my valentine. I've noticed a lot of people also connect with rock as sort of a nostalgia, so I think that's pretty cool. Evanescence is a favorite of mine, so I'm glad I got to listen to it while I visited the blog.

    1. I love AC/DC so much, I would've included them here but I felt like I was adding too much.

  2. When I read your blog, it really interested me and made want to keep reading! Rock and alternative rock is by far my most favorite genre. Even when I was little, I would jam out with my iPod nano and my earbuds in the car, or any change that I got. I can also agree with you on the EDM. I am not a huge fan of it, but I still listen to it. If I am listening to EDM, I have to be in the mood to get funky, and crazy. EDM, for me, is the sort of music that you would listen to at a rave or at a party, none of which I could or would ever do. I look forward to seeing your next blog!

  3. Hey Terri, I love the beginning gifs about what not to call you and how to pr ounce your name and love the style of your blog, very intriguing. I don't exactly connect while with rock, but I do enjoy the artist Evanescence and Sade from time to time. And your blog will be the first of me listening to SZA and I love her flow, Thank you for introducing me to her!

  5. Oh the nostalgia your blog brought me with Evanescence. My sister and I would always sing our hearts out to this song. The chorus always gets stuck in my head. I loved the song Another lifetime; it feels likes something I've heard before , but I can't put my finger on it. Your music taste is a nice mix and I enjoyed your picks.

  6. Seeing Evanescence and Marylin Manson really just took me back to the good old days. You have a very good taste in music and I'm interested in what metal bands you listen to! I listened to the R&B songs you included which were very different from what I'm used to but I enjoyed them.

The "don't do that" made me laugh! If I'm being totally honest I've never listened to any of these really except "Pour Some Sugar On Me" so I'll have to give them a listen!
